I left Shane in the park and made my way slowly back to Divine Providence, lingering in the city before reluctantly returning through the forest until I saw the familiar shimmer of magic surrounding the complex. From outside, the illusion looked like a collapsed warehouse, twisted with roots and vines, filled with trash and broken glass. But with a few more steps, the rusty chains and barbed-wire fence melted away, revealing the tall towers and central courtyard, lit with hanging lanterns and torches.

The gateway was barred by two stern-looking statues of Michael and Gabriel. My father had explained it to me once; it was symbolic, of how alary should always attempt to avoid conflict with communication when possible, but also prepared to triumph when it became necessary. Something like the human idiom, speak softly and carry a big stick. I felt guilty, passing around the outside fence and sneaking in through the back, but there was no reason to worry my father without cause.

I slept poorly, counting the hours until dawn. Then I crept down the hallway and knocked softly on the door to Mordecai’s office. I waited nervously, rocking back on my heels. The door finally opened, and my uncle smiled. “Cora, you’re up early,” he said, sounding baffled.

For good reason, too. If I’d had it my way, I would’ve probably slept in until noon, and stayed up until four in the morning. But now that I’d decided to confront my problems, rather than avoid them, I felt like I had to move quickly. Weeks of restlessness and pretending to be someone else had filled me with a clarity of purpose I’d never found in Arefet’s lessons. For better or worse, I was myself again, and I was going to see this through.

“I just couldn’t wait to see my brilliant, handsome uncle,” I said, grinning.

Mordecai waved me in and closed the door behind me. “Well, on the one hand, it’s good to have someone around here appreciate me. On the other hand, you probably want something, and since you came to me first, it’s probably something that would make Joel severely angry, with us both, isn’t it?” he asked.

“Probably,” I shrugged.

I took my usual seat across the desk, which this time was significantly neater than it had been during my last visit. Mordecai sat across from me, frowning at a loose string he’d discovered on the sleeve of his crisp, white shirt.

“Do I need to bury any bodies?” he asked. “If so, I’d better get changed.”

“It’s nothing that drastic. It’s just a question,” I replied. “A couple of questions, actually… about, what we discussed before.”

I had a bit of a plan in my head. Start with bribery. End with extortion or blackmail. But now that I was here, it was hard to get out the right words, and something told me Mordecai wasn’t going to make it easy for me.

“I’m listening,” he said, reaching behind him for a platter of cheese and crackers, and some cold tea.

“We’d talked about the blessing ceremony,” I said.
